چکیده

Whole, unstimulated saliva and dental plaque were collected from 63 children ages 6-13 years, 29 with dental caries and 34 without. If a child was infected with Streptococcus mutans, it was isolated from dental plaque and characterized. Saliva was tested for IgM, IgG, and IgA that would bind indigenous S. mutans, if present, and for antibodies that would bind 6 laboratory strains of S. mutans, each representing distinct antigen types. The results show that there were no significant differences in antibody levels for any type of S. mutans between children of different caries experience. The data do not support a protective role for salivary antibodies to

Frequency, biofilm formation and acid susceptibility of streptococcus mutans and streptococcus sobrinus in saliva of preschool children with different levels of caries activity

BACKGROUND One of the causative factors in development of dental caries is microorganisms. Two species of Mutans streptococci including Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus are associated with dental caries in human beings. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of S. mutans and S. sobrinus in saliva of children with different caries activity and ability to form biofi...

IgA antibodies to Streptococcus mutans in caries-resistant and -susceptible children.

Previous studies have shown a positive correlation between salivary IgA antibody levels to Streptococcus mutans and caries resistance in adults. In this study, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to compare IgA antibody levels with S. mutans in whole and parotid saliva from 20 caries-susceptible (CS; DMFS > 5) and 20 caries-resistant (CR; DMFS < or = 1) children (aged 7-11 years)...

Bacteriocins in S. mutans strains isolated from children with and without dental caries: biotypes and sensitivity to antibiotics.

The aim of this study was to determine the production of bacteriocins in the Streptococcus mutans strains isolated from children with and without dental caries. With this purpose the dmft index was determined and non-stimulated saliva was collected from 53 3- to 5-year-old children. The samples were cultured on Mitis Salivarius Bacitracin agar and incubated anaerobically for two days at 37 degr...
